The journey continues....
The Save Our Tigers Telethon on Dec 12, 2010 was a 12-hour live televised conclave of environment experts, wildlife conservationists, political leaders, children, celebrities, industry and prominent public figures who came together to pool donations to facilitate tiger conservation and ensure a sustainable biodiversity.
A donation of Rs 4,86,68,932 has been collected and 35 Rapid Response Teams arranged for the tiger protection.
Following are other successes of the Telethon:
Amitabh Bachchan donated Rs 14 lakhs to the cause. Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan offered another 14 lakhs as part of their contribution.
Neha Dhupia, Dia Mirza, Purab Kohli and many other celebrities spearheaded various activities like Shikaari-ka-Shikaar and tiger- spotting at different wildlife locations.
Musical performances were held across the country. Musicians like Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, Mohit Chauhan, Salim-Sulaiman and local bands like Pulp Fiction, Coshish and Band Called Nine played for the cause too.
Children across the country managed to procure more than 1,00,000 signatures to add weight to this cause - one of the main sites for this signature campaign being Kabini in Karnataka.
Noticeable events took place in the metro cities like a major painting competition for children held at India Gate, New Delhi, where a donation-collection booth was also placed.
Wildlife experts like Mike Pandey, senior representatives of the Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI) and likewise underscored the need to revamp the old forest regulations and provide for the welfare funds for tiger protection forces.
Actual protectors of the tiger - forest guards and rangers were felicitated for their sincere efforts in preserving their respective forest-areas.
Hemendra Kothari promised to double the donation-collection. Priya Dutt (MP), BJP president Mr. Nitin Gadkari and many more donated in support.
Events were held on the outskirts of various tiger reserves (like Ranthambore) for the education of the local population.
Chief ministers of various states reassured action on their individual pledges and prominent jurists like Attorney-General Soli Sorabjee promised legal immunity.
Corporates like Victorinox, SKNL Group, Taj Group and many others contributed both in cash and kind.
