Just 1411 left.

Just 1411 left.

Our national animal is fighting for its life.

From around 40,000 at the turn of the last century, there are just 1411 tigers left in India.

If we don’t act now, we could lose this part of our heritage forever.

Speak up, blog, share the concern, stay informed… Every little bit helps.

So i want to protect our tigers from bad people.
My opinion is focus lead to this situation.
We should seariously think of breading them in a safe environment and we don’t need professionals for this job. We need passionate volunteers for this job.

This site is doing an awesome job on creating awareness, also attention must be given to stop poaching. if you see anyone trying to buy a tiger claw as jewellery for luck please create awareness regarding the species going extinct, let them know what luck a tiger had when it had the claws removed, the pain the suffering!!!
    spread the word on twitter.
Spread the word wherever possible, im doing my best.

This is one of the very few ads that shook me up….literally. How would you feel if your kid was left homeless, hungry without any trace of his parents? Frantic….I guess most of you, that includes me too are too caught up in the stress of our daily and sometimes petty worries to look at the biggger picture…Wake up guys….I remember visiting a National Park some years back and craving to see the tiger. Unfortunately, Sher Khan didn’t oblige me leaving me a little disappointed. And I also recollect visitors saying that there was no point of visiting the forests if we can’t get to see the tiger. While it’s little unfair to the other animals, it also highlights the fact that we think about the fantastic tiger only when we want to see it. This has to change. We need a more consciousness from everyone of us to save our forests. If there are no forests there will be no tigers. Period. And poachers should be given the strictest punishment possible…..I would like to request people to stop using products that involve killing of tigers. Please save our tigers and our heritage. People across the world are doing their bit to protect their indigenous flora and fauna, we too need to make efforts. What is the point of being a economic superpower if we can save our innocent and helpless animals?

  5. vipin says:

    Hi, i m vipin

All india should be shamed of themselves that only 1411 tigers are left in our country.

Come on guys its not just enough to write blogs, crying and thinking.
something practical needs to be done, its time to act now

insteading of spending thousands of rupees for partying,
Atleast we should help those organizations financially that are working for this cause
so that something practical is implemented to save this beautiful animal. These organizations cant do anything if they are financially weak, a lots of money is required in today’s world to implement the things.
I request you to PLZZ do your bit, write mails to the editors of leading news channels and news papers force them to publicize this issue, it does not cost much to write a mail, we can write as many mails as we can.
this will surely force them to highlight this issue and wake up our sleeping government.

  6. gayathri says:

This is a very shameful news for us. Lots of laws have been made, but not being put into force. Our government and we the citizens are responsible for this pitiful situation. Strict laws MUST BE put into force to prevent HUNTING of our NATIONAL ANIMAL. And thats my suggestion.

  7. suman choudhary says:

we human being are so selfish …we never tried to think about our national pride…Write maximum blog and DO SOME THING… I really want to Save the Tiger…

  8. Ankan Dutta says:

As a student I’m doing all i can to spread awareness amongst my friends ~ not only for tigers but an entire lot of species.Just wish they’d introduce some other method of education relating to this subject than plain old textbook and bookish knowledge.

  9. varun says:

most of the poeple who visit any national park for tiger they hardly cares for this animal for them its a show .if they see tiger they feel lucky after that they just forget the plight this anuimal is facing .but it does not mean that the general poeple should not allow to visit becouse it is good and transperancy is maintaind and poeple can see there effort in conservation . all national parks are sorrounded by resort most of them having night time partyes and some time burn fire crakers disturbing tiger habitat .

  10. Megha Mathur says:

ONCE LOST IS LOST FOREVER….THIS STATEMENT IS BECOMING TRUE FOR TIGERS….OH GOD…JUST 1411 TIGERS IN INDIA….INDIA HAD THE LARGEST NUMBERS OF TIGERS AT A TIME….PLEASE DONT LET THIS SAND GO OUT OF OUR HANDS…!! TIGERS ARE VERY VERY IMPORTANT FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT AND FOOD CHAIN RUNNING IN THE ENVIRONMENT…THEY JUST NEED A GREAT ATTENTION FROM OUR GOVERNMENT AND THE FOREST AUTHORITIES…SO THAT THEY CAN PROVIDE TIGERS A HEALTHY AND SAFE HABIBTAT…!!! 4 TIGERS DIED IN CORBETT NATIONAL PARK(DEHRADUN), ONE IN RANTHAMBORE(RAJASTHAN) LAST MONTH….IMAGINE PEOPLE ONE MORE LOSS WILL MAKE A LOSS OF MANY MORE TIGERS…!!! I REQUEST ALL OF YOU TO PLEASE COME FORWARD AND MAKE A LITTLE EFFORT FOR THE SAKE OF THIS PRECIOUS ANIMAL…!!!

  11. Abhinav says:

What the tiger needs at these dwindling numbers is a credible and focussed captive breeding and wild rehabilitation program. the existing zoos can be used for the genetic pool, some concerted effort is needed to make zoo breeding successful while keeping the genetic diversity intact…there’s plenty ‘empty’ real estate in the existing tiger reserves to rehabilitate and repopulate. natural rate of replenishment is prob too slow to make any impact now.

one way to support this is if more corporates can be involved as part of thier CSR initiative…then one would not need to depend on the unwilling or probably ‘unable’ govt for funding and monitoring…

  12. Sanya says:

This is not fair what we are doing to these tigers…..they are our culture, our heritage we can’t just let go of them
I may be just 14 but no matter how big or small we can unite !! and save these tigers
    WE DONT HAVE A CHOICE!!!
SPEAK NOW OR FOREVER BE SILENCED!

  13. krishnamoorthy says:

I would like to know as to why is there a necessity for support from people. It is easy ofcourse and would take a month utmost to collect and save our tigers coz I am sure there are enough people who would come forward through this campaign….

What are all the ministers for forest and Ecological welfare up to ???and is there a shortfall of funds from the government and if so how much and why? aren’t such projects taken seriously and given priority for allocation of funds.. What are the status of artifical breeding of this depleting cate family???? We need answers for all these so that people are all on same page……

We not only need to collect but there also needs to be a mechanism to see how these funds are being utilised made available in this same website collecting it!!! It is very difficult to trust any one or organization these days and unless this information is made available,we are again giving room for yet another scam where inbetween people loot money!!!..

Will there be assurance that the poachers are brought to justice and we have this in effect immediately….In my opinion its not easy to just get in to a forest and poach a tiger without the knowledge of any single forest/ guards knowlwdge….. We need to build trust before money is collected and utilised…

    Thankyou.

  14. sharan says:

  16. Savijith says:

if these poachers and hunters are so daring and think of themselves strong that they can take their guns and wnt to fight these dangerous yet beautiful animal, better they are sent to the borders and asked to fight the even dangerous terrorists and show their courage against them and it would be happy if those animals(terrorists) get extinct.

  17. mikhi says:

tiger is our nation’s pride if we let it down then it will be an gr8 insult so please don’t let happen it ……………….even get ready to adopt the cubs as pets we have to take all the necessary measures to save them and leave them in the hands of the idiot government because this government is hopeless, shameless and even helpless so please let us save them

  18. Manpreet singh says:

Its already too late. The only way to save these innocent animals is to call upon some NGOs from abroad who are having better technology and methods to save our tigers. Not only tigers but other animals like leopards, lions etc too.

In India , the forest officials themselves are involved in the poachings bcoz the govt. doesnt pay them much so they have figured out different ways to earn more money. But how can they kill someone for earning money. Dont know what they have in their mind.

Call NGOs from abroad and give them full charge of the forests or National parks etc. No interference. And you will see the results soon. But the main problem is that the indian govt. is still sleeping .

I read the post of Ramakrishna and remembered about sakhi. Even I cried frnd. I feel like crying everytime when someone hurts an animal.
Valmiki and Raghu were there who raised their voice against the corrupt system and inappropriate methods that were used to count the no. of tigers etc. But soon they were kicked out. This is the bitter truth of corrupt Indian system.

I beg to Indian govt. to do something . I wont say as soon as possible bcoz its already too late.

  19. JOYDIP says:

WE THE INDIANS HAVE TO WAKE UP NOW.wake up from ur deep sleep……PLEASE SURVIVE OUR TIGERS AT YOUR END

  21. Pinku says:

    Dear All,

It’s a serious matter that only 1411 tigers are left in India. If we are still sleeping then our next generations will see the tigers in photos & Televisions not in reality. So, wake up………… try ur best to save the tigers. Co-operate with the Govt or concern authority to save our tigers. And this is the request from the comon people of India to our Govt to take imediate actions to save the tigers which is/are our national pride…………………… Still we can do enough for them…So plz wake up….

  22. Saloni Dutta says:

Tiger is our national animal and it has become endangered now. Sundarban is famous for its ROYAL BENGAL TIGERs. Last year, I with my family members went to see or nation’s pride, our national animal. The tour was not less than an adventutre. In the vast estuary, we were devoid of connection with the outer world. Every moment we were terrified as dacoits called jaladashu in the local language ,ruled the area. Yet we were ready to risk our lives as we wanted to see our national animal ruling desperately in its kingdom. When we returned with an empty hand we realised that man, the frailest of all living creatures is ruling above all. There were no tigers. The time we came back, we heard a RBT was caught injured and brought to the camp for recovery. After few hours it died. One more death. The countdown has already begun. There are just 1411 tigers remaining in India. Doesn’t this bother us? Are we still shameless to kill these animals? This will in return affect us. When are we going to put our thinking caps on? Lets come forward and save the remaining tigers

  23. Manpreet singh says:

And this 1411 figure was taken in 2008. Till now it wud have been around 1300 I think. few days back I heard that some village people killed a tiger , ate its meat and sold the skin.

Now wat is the govt doing. Atleast punish them so that they dont do this again. If I was the PM , I wud straight away give the order to kill all of them who were involved in this. No matter wat.

But atleast punish them otherwise they will do this again. And the laws in india are so week and stupid. wat can I say. just 25000 and 3 years of imprisionment and that also to very few people who dont have contact with some high class personality. They come out in days and money doesnt matters to them bcoz they will again go and kill more tigers and earn in millions.

  24. shiv says:

when ************* party’s meeting was organised i was asked to organise they gave me some 3 lakhs for the food of the dignitaries who were attending it .And for the dignitaries numbers were just 5 so think how much our ministers are enjoing so let us be the robin-hoods and bring these ministers to their real status and use the thier corrupted money into this initiative.Started by the aircel guys…………long-live tiger

  25. Survival of Pilibhit Tarai Unprotected Endangered Wildlife
AFTER BEING PASSED FROM GOI FILE IS SILENT STILL IN U.P. GOVT. OFFICE
60 tigers in pilibhit but no protection for them.

Pilibhit Jan 2010. Pilibhit is one of the few well forested districts in Uttar Pradesh. According to an estimate of year 2004, Pilibhit District has over 800 sq km forests, constituting roughly 23 per cent of the district’s total area. Forests in Pilibhit have at least 36 tigers and a good predator base for their survival. Pilibhit forests are part of terai forests, which together with grasslands constitute habitat for over 127 animals, 556 bird species and 2,100 flowering plants. They are also home to around 6 million people who depend on them for their livelihoods.
The project for Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is facing a last minute hitch. The new home for UP tigers spanning over 72,000 square metre area has ecosystem with vast open spaces and sufficient feed for the elegant predators government of India in April 2008, on the basis of the potential to have special type of 2005 to make a home for the endangered cats in Pilibhit forests was sent to the develop Pilibhit forests area as home for the striped cats. A proposal was created in New Delhi GoI. The high-level meeting held by senior officials of the department reviewed the status of the reserve on Thursday. “Objections have been raised against certain parts of the plan but it would be rectified soon”, said sources. The objections are over the allocation of area as buffer and core zone. Core zone is the deeper pocket of protected forest where no human interference is allowed and tigers can thrive in peace whereas buffer area is forest cover on fringes of the core.
This necessitates that lesser area be marked as a buffer zone. The plan broadly marks only 25 to 30 per cent of area for buffer zone. The major portion would be a core area to accord maximum protection to wandering feline population in Pilibhit. Officials are re-working on it and might send back the blueprint to headquarters with corrections within three days’ time. That could be the only delay as of now from the department’s side, said sources.
Other states identified for getting a new reserve have arrived well on time but UP has turned out to be a laggard so far. If it acts fast it might bag fund in the upcoming meeting of National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in all probability proposed in June.
New tiger reserve is a need for Pilibhit which has fairly good number of tigers moving over scattered patches of forest. The area has high human interference making big cats vulnerable to poachers. There is a need to unify these patches through afforestation, active forest management and conservation.
The new reserve is about bringing all five ranges of Pilibhit under a consolidated patch. The five ranges are Barahi, Mala, Deoria, Mahof and Haripur. Number of tiger sightings might not be good in all of them still bringing them all together will increase the prowl area for big cats.
The department had to shoot down a young tigress from Pilibhit in March after it strayed out and became a cause of trouble. The case goes for the new reserve. Proposal on the new reserve is proceeding slowly after it got an in-principle approval from NTCA in September 2008.
SDO Mr. Dhram Singh (Incharge DFO Pilibhit) forestry say that we are coming to implement the project “TIGER RESERVE” very soon Tiger counting is started but way we cannot find any factual results of being implemented. The UP government plans to set up a new tiger reserve in Pilibhit. The new reserve would be spread over an area of approximately 1,000 sq km. It is expected to ease the pressure on the Dudhwa forest reserve that has witnessed a massive depletion of forest cover in recent years, adding to the man-animal conflict in the region. The new tiger reserve would run through Pilibhit, Mala Range, Barahi Range and NepalSukla Fhata Range. The Dudhwa forest reserve includes Katarniaghat and Kakraha range of Bahraich division. Pilibhit, Khutar and Kakraha are reserved forest areas that will be converted into protected areas for the reserves with a slight alteration in the boundaries. The outline for the reserve, as identified by the Critical Tiger Habitat Committee, was sent to the Central government in January this year. The reserve was sanctioned in this year’s budget and forest department has already completed the exercise of delineating its stretch and extent.
As talked to very senior Pilibhit Environmental Activist Mr. Parvez Haneef who is running NGO Paryavaran Sudhar Sansthan (PSS) and working for Natural Habitat, Environment and Wildlife from the past the 20 years says that he work with coordination of District forestry With active support and information network made by PSS and District Forest Department; wild life management activist forest officer, tiger presences increased by resonance survey 6 male, 9 female 1 cub in 1999, 14 male 9 female and cub 3 total 26 in 2001, 12 male 16 female and 4 cubs total 32 in 2003 and 12 male and 22 female with 1 cub now total 35 Tiger. The Forest Department says now tiger are not less than 42. Past positive efforts were made from Barahi forest range most potential area for tiger by allotting irrigation department land in between forest and monitor the tiger point with help of local Bengalis, Gujjar families, people information residing in and near forest organized many awareness programmes in villages. School children visits and appeal were made in forest and nearby village establishing a office allotted in Barahi range, bifurcation, goats were also supplied to Tigers by socio-economic plan of fishing trade it Satishal Selha village, a Chatai Industrial Cooperative Society was also developed in 1996 to develop the economic status of Bengali 2000 family depend on forest.
Most potential area of Barahi range 8 to 12 tiger were reported, long 6-8 km kharja nahar unused from 1940 transferred to irrigation from forest in British period allotted to PSS proved a effective habitat of Tigers.
He says PSS made of lot of efforts to declare and protect Pilibhit 670 sq km area for Tiger reserve by many electronic media, print media support and involve work of PSS without any government grants. But 1989 tiger reserve proposal was rejected by state government and now in 2008 when state government recommended the proposal on demand of wild life activists and Forest Department to Government of India but Tiger task force meeting refused such a important and wildlife management proposal. PSS work experience with WWF-TEF deep touch with local forest officers wild life management, monitoring evaluation, awareness environment making work in forest village since 1987 having some time difference in Tiger counting with govt and WWF TALP Pilibhit unit reporting as partner NGO, Latest Tiger counting was some what different with past reconance survey and counting and declare that 42 Tigers are in the forest good habitat for Tiger was accepted by technical associate of forest survey of India Deharadun team says during forest survey 2005 after 1965 in Pilibhit, team told to PSS that biodiversity of Pilibhit forest is very potential for wild life.
PSS vision is very clear as justified concept that a countless amount has been invested by govt. and international funders in Project Tiger related 28 sanctuaries and national parks a remarkable report regarding the 50% shortage of Tiger in Madhya Pradesh which is known as Tiger State. Prime minister taken cognizance to review the tiger projects. Taskforce come in existence under environmental veteran activists SUNITA NARAYAN chairman to report better prospects to save Tigers in Indian forest sanctuary and parks. According the report copy sent to PSS; report emphasize to follow the innovative working of KERALA Tiger project working where local groups were involved in Tiger protection lack of information system help of local people regarding forest management and wild life resources govt. networking was responsible for hopeless results in Tiger survival and boldly made advise to Prime Minister to review the past working of Tiger Project. PSS thinks that it is must, we the environmental and wildlife activists should take a lesson with a report of project Tiger’s secretary Dr. Rajesh Gopal that now only 1411 tiger are in the different 17 states of India in 2006 in comparison the identified 3227 tiger in year 2002, 1909 Tiger loss assessed in last 5 years, on an average 10 lack rupees expenses on each tiger ratio only Corbett National Park Uttrakhand and two tiger reserve of Karnatak Bandipur and Nagarhole are only safe for tiger in out of 28.
Now UP state Tiger reserve sanctuary even Dudhwa National Park, a starting Tiger project, work of Indian Wild Life Protection history and dream and project of Late Smt. Indira Gandhi Prime Minister and Padam Bhooshan Awardee Late Billy Arjun Singh recently died in Jan 2010. It is reported that out of 284 tiger of UP state in 2002 reports only 109 tiger are counted in 2006 in last 4 years, and Poachers were still continuing in their activities.
So as being and very big national heritage issue and we all know that global warming is started it is now to take a new step for “WILDLIFE CONSERVATION & NATURAL HERITAGE”. Poacher were killing wild animal for their Bones & Skin and Smuggling is running fast through Nepal Border.

    Points to be highlighted

    • Pilibhit forest are not declared protected for tiger project since efforts made from 1989, despite tiger workforce concept govt. of India bold recommendation by it president Sunita Narain and 2006 tiger position report of project tiger loosing 1909 tiger in 28 tiger reserve of 17 state in last 4 years.
    • UP tiger reported 109 total in 2006 project tiger report in comparison 284 tiger in protected and unprotected area while only Pilibhit area unprotected forest have 42 tiger a matter of challenge and research for wild life activist of the world
    • Political credit issue for tiger reserve of Pilibhit in between state and center govt.
    • Population pressure, unemployment of youth in near forest area villages.
    • Lac of self supporting stable vival project .
    • Acute shortage of forest watching staff and posting wild life management expert IFS officers.
    • Real counting of tiger by telemetry and other latest system in comparison foot print method.
    • Nepal and China Border activities of tiger trafficking challenges for drug use.

  33. anil says:

don’t write just a blog.it will not help tigers.government have to strict with forest security.because our security is not so strict and it helps poachers to kill our tigers.not only tigers there are many other animals and birds which are killing by poachers only for their skins or for a poacher’s enjoyment.

  34. Shuvam says:

Its a disgrace for all of us that our national animal is in serious jeopardy.”Tiger Tiger burning bright” from the famous poem “The Tiger” by Ruskin Bond tells us about vigor and magnificence of the beast. Such a beast is a real heritage for a country and we should feel fortunate to have such a creation of God as our national animal. But it is our carelessness, illiteracy about these creatures that has put them in serious danger.Only 1411 tiger are left in the wild therefore it is high time for us, the tiger’s worst enemy to wake up and work hand in hand to save this magnificent beast. So please!! Wake up this maybe our last chance!!

  35. aishwarya says:

Guys…Well writing here and joining the blog is one thing…but think…how many of us are seriously do something about it…I guess if we all do…it can do wonders….I know friends who go to a tiger land and wanna be there at their own way…shouting…drinking…and what not….humen is one such animal….who care only for self….people who buy tiger parts….skin, bones, teeth…for showing off…for them….what matters is there hollow showing off attitude…they don’t care about tiger….so teach a lesson to any one who you find has this attitude and show how strong you can be about the very existence of tiger and not in very species of humen of their kind….kick them on face and show them that you are stronger…..make them realize…..thats what you can do….and thats what I do.

  37. Rishi Kawatra says:

Hi All………….they all can just kill tigers but cannot allow us to adopt tigers, Like people are having dogs and cats as their pets. why cant they be alloted a space where they can have tigers as their pets…………… this will also assure that tigers will get what they deserve and people will also take care of their pet.

  39. Aashmita says:

    Hi guys,
Making this public knowledge is excellent, but are there any other physical ways we can use to stop our national animal from going extinct? I dont think most poachers are going to be reading blogs and things….
No offense to anybody, I think this is a brilliant effort…but would really like to know what else we can do…am super keen on this.

  40. vaishnavi says:

  42. Prachi says:

    Hi All,
In a country where money always spills over for cricket IPLs, stupid reality shows & farce political rallies there is still major dearth of resources for an act like Tiger conservation. i feel its not just the lack of resources but also a lack of will from the govt to save this soon to be extinct cat in India.
I feel everyone who has joined this roar should suggest some stern actions to be taken n that too asap.
    1. If resources in terms of money is one problem to start off with, we can use donation not by choice but by force as an option(e.g for every one movie ticket you buy a meagre amount of Rs.5/ticket goes to WWF. Imagine this amount can raise to become an astronomical figure). Various other sources like these can be easily thought of.
    2. Instead of hoping that now tigers will be best taken care in their most natural habitat(or else this situation would have never arised), scientific breeding centres should be opened near by every natural habitat of the tiger. The immediate aim to increase the number, so lets focus on doing that in safe environments where tigers can be bred, fed & well taken of.
    3. The next goal would be a complete revamp of our forest officials. These are the people who have established their rackets to illegally sell tiger skin, teeth etc. In many remote places, tiger parts of body are still used as an ingredient in medicines!!! which is ridiculous. As correctly said in some of the above blogs, we should take help of forrest officials from other countries in getting this right.
    4. The last but the most important step is to create awareness. We are a technologically equipped country now n what better way to use this than for spreading messages about tiger conservation.

Just like Teach India was one of the very successful & a grand initiative that was taken, I hope Save our Tigers will also be successful one day and I offer my full support to this initiative & wish all the best to one n all involved in it.
Let this be 1411 & still counting the reverse way…

    Prachi.

  43. Apoorv Pndey says:

stop making new laws for SAVING tigers….just start KILLING the poachers….nothing else is going to stop this thing…

  44. ..The British had devised a system for their all round well being(cornering all the praise and shifting the blame on the Indian civil servants) during pre-independence days which has been blatantly persisted with by our unscupulous beaureucracy to protect themselves and their inefficiencies..which in turn proves a very handy tool for our politicians to take shelter and hide their non-performance because they are the people under the public glare all the time with print and visual media playing a very pro-active role these days. And you couple this with the RTI Act and the circle gets completed. This is the state of affairs when huge funds are allotted and are left unutilised at the end of the each financial year due to inept civil servants and actions desirable on ground are mired in the rules and regulations of the files and by the time actions do take place they have either outlived their utility or are rendered redundent..the blame game leaves everything in a woefully pathetic condition..THE PROJECT TIGER IS A CASE IN POINT AND THE RESULTANT SUFFERER..THE FRIGHTFUL CONSEQUENSES ARE FOR ALL OF US TO SEE..THE NUMERS IN THIS CASE ARE ONLY THE END RESULT..OUR WORRY SHOULD BE THE COLLOSAL WASTE OF TIME..ENERGY..GOVT. APATHY..AND THE LIP SERVICE THE CENTRAL GOVT. AND RESPECTIVE STATE GOVTS’ TO OFFER..IT IS IN THIS CONTEXT THIS ENDEAVOUR BECOMES SO IMPORTANT..BECAUSE IT PROPOSES TO INVOLVE PEOPLE..IT IS OUR PIOUS RESPONSIBILITY THAT THIS OMVEMENT BECOMES A REVOLUTION AND THE NATIONAL ANIMAL IS REHABILITATED TO ITS PLACE OF PRIDE..IT IS TOO PRECIOUS TO BE LOST..WE ALL MUST COME TOGETHER IN THIS GIGANTIC CAUSE..I DEDICATE MYSELF AND URGE OTHERS TO JOIN ME IN THIS CRUSADE..
