Just 1411 left.

Our national animal is fighting for its life.

From around 40,000 at the turn of the last century, there are just 1411 tigers left in India.

If we don’t act now, we could lose this part of our heritage forever.

Speak up, blog, share the concern, stay informed… Every little bit helps.

Aircel has partnered with WWF-India to help save our tigers. Explore the site to know how you can help.

  7. Swarup Mohanty says:

    Guys,

I have been frequenting the Tiger Reserve at Bandhavgarh because of sheer love for the animal and also to show it to my young son. We have had some wonderful sightings. But the fac is:
    1. Every year I hear of at least 3-5 new cubs in the park. But the over all count there always remains 68-70. People there are all aware of the poached tigers. It is strange how it operates in the open and nobody cares!
    2. They tell me that they hav stopped naming tigers now in the park. Their reason is that people then go there only to see the named tigers ( the earstwhile “Charger” and now B2). I think the real reason not to name them is to give poaching a free hand. If you ame a tiger, the tiger then becomes known and one cannot get away with poaching that one.
    3. Ask any forest official there, including the Mahuts and they willl tell you very frankly how they cannot report a carcass. It is all a big set up there. It is a systematic process of keeping some alive and quietly smuggling some. A tiger, alive or dead can fetch at least a crore is what I am told there.
Hence such awareness programmes are important. But it is more important to take it there to the jungles. We need to make everybody in the reserves know that it is time all this is stopped. The Warden, the workers, the mahuts…all have to be revisited. The whol system has to be overhauled!

ONLY THEN WILL WE SAVE THE TIGER!!

We should protect our left out forest, hence the tiger’s will have their own nature home which will be accomplished by our government’s strict rules. We should focus saving our tigers from hunters.

  12. Roshini says:

  13. Joyeta says:

    To everybody,
Tigers have been our national reserve time being.
It is our own responsibility to raise voice to keep them the support coz they are just mere animals with not even having the power of speech….
    if not we,then who???
    Plz do join the race….

  14. Amit says:

I feel, it is rude to shoot tigers for their skins, I feel that people who shoot them should be punished. They should be skined alive in public to give a teaching lesson to other pochers of tiger. I feel if you feel like killing then they should think that they are not killing an animal but one among them as humans are social animals

  16. Aqeel says:

In our country Government servent is the biggest thief. Project tiger, Tiger sancturies etc etc. are just the corruption ground of the Government servents. The government servent use all the laws for his personal benifit, no crime can be done without the help of Government servent.
It is not only the tiger there are many more wild animals which are endanger. There is only one solution to save them and that is commercial farming of these animals. A tiger has a value of around RS.20 laks in International market. If government allow the commercial farming people will develop the wild life farms. In South africa the government has change the law and have allowd commercial farming of many wild animals and that is how they have save the endanger animals.
Remeber we can not save our wild life depending on the corrupt government officials our officers are 99.9999% corrupt.

  17. Ipsita says:

Tiger in one of the beautiful creation of God…. So please save them…..

  18. Anish says:

The factors responsible for the sharp decline in the number of tigers throughout India is not just poaching, but a whole lot of other factors too have lead to this decrease in tiger numbers.
The destruction of tiger ecosystem is a direct threat to these magnificant animals. We need more protected areas for these animals to survive peacefully.
The decline in the number of tiger prey, which can be attributed to loss of ecosystem (urbanization) as well as extensive hunting by humans, is also a major reason. There are several forests in India which does not have a single tiger not because of poaching but as a result of the shooting out of all the tiger prey! We need to ban illegal hunting of tiger prey and those who fail to adhere to law should be prosecuted.
Many tigers die to electric fenses and steps should be taken to avoid human tiger conflicts. Urbanization is an unstoppable phenomenon but steps should be taken immediately to reduce the impact on tiger population due to this.
Also in certain cases there are more tigers in a very limited protected area and this leads to fighting between male tigers over territory leading to death. Tigers are solitary animals and each tiger requires a few square kilometers to survive on its on. When there is not enough space territories of several tigers may overlap and this leads to fights over territory. More protected area need to be added to the existing reserves. I also feel that the reserves that we have are small pockets of forest scattered here and there with human population inbetween and this also is a concern. Animals tend to move from one pocket of forest to another in search of prey and often come in contact with humans which may lead to disaster either for the animal or the human.
Poaching….this still remains the single largest threat to tiger population around the world. Goverment should make use of the latest technology to protect our national animal. The special forces formed to guard our forests and protect these animals should be equipped with more sophisticated weapons. There are several organisations that work independantly to protect our tigers both nationally and internationally. The goverment should actively involve such organisations in the steps taken to protect our tigers. Goverment should also get more people/scientists/researchers who have knowledge about tigers involved in these protective measures rather than forming some committee that comprises of people who haven’t even seen a tiger!

If we fail to act soon(which we haven’t, but I seriously doubt if any of the steps taken are serious enough or even working)…these magnificant animals will soon be wiped out from our forests and the only place to find a tiger would be the zoos!

  19. nirmal prim says:

Over the past 15 years or so ,I have witnessed the unbelievable fact that our population has exploded…out of control now and gatthering steam by the minute or even second. In this case seniaro , where do our Tigers fit in ? Their habitat has dwindled ,mans greed has quadrabled .Very soon you will see very healthy and lovely looking Tigers only in small enclosures in the western countries .Our children will see only Asses and more asses everywhere.what we need
    a Love for the animal
b educate people about how close is the relation between the tigers existence and ours, educate also people living in China etc etc about the futilility of using tiger parts as medicne etc
c pay the people living in tiger reserves for their losses of cattle and educate them about the tiger
d need to regulate our own population
put a picture of me close to a Tiger ,who will look more REGAL,BEAUTIFUL ,HANDSOME …. ?? No prizes for guessing right

  20. najma sanai says:

This one is for the government or the powers that be…..tiger reserves can/should be converted into war zones and given over to the military. Sadly that seems to be the only authority that is still corruption free. Shoot at sight orders and all arrests to be tried in military courts. Swift convictions and all indictions/ punishments should be given a huge media coverage.
There are a few conservationists in India who are passionate about the tiger, but unfortunately their voice has not been heard by our politicians over the years. maybe its time to bring in some “gora” conversationists from abroad who may have more impact on our corrupt/inept/selfish/uneducated politicians who cant think/see beyond their “kursi”.
Hellloooooo mantrijis!!!! Is anyone listening to the dying roars of our iunique national animal?? is there anyone up there who cares???

  23. Nidhi Sharma says:

Plz save our tigers if i could able to do anything for thing i do my best.plz plz plz plz save the tigers.

  24. says:

Saving the tiger means saving mankind..

Not only is tiger a beautiful animal but it is also the indicator of the forest’s health. Saving the tiger means we save the forest since tiger cannot live in places where trees have vanished and in turn secure food and water for all.

If we make sure tigers live, we have to make sure that deer, antelope and all other animals that the tiger eats (its prey base) live. To make sure that these herbivores live, we must make sure that all the trees, grass and other plants that these prey animals need for food are protected. In this way, the whole forest gets saved! Saving the tiger means saving its entire forest kingdom with all the other animals in it.

Also forests catch and help store rainwater and protect soils. In this way we protect our rivers and recharge groundwater sources. Areas with less trees lead to floods, killing people and destroying homes. It takes away the precious soil, leaving behind a wasteland. The soil jams up our lakes and dams, reducing their ability to store water. By destroying the tiger’s home, we not only harm tigers, but also ourselves.

The tiger thus becomes the symbol for the protection of all species on our earth since it is at the top of the foodchain. This is why we sometimes call the tiger, an apex predator, an indicator of our ecosystem’s health

  25. Jacob Datta says:

It’s so sad to loose them and that too so fast. Whom do we hold responsible as a the modus operendi is larger than we can imagine. On 21st Sep,2009 a gun battle broke out between forest officials and poachers in Kaziranga National Park, Assam, India after the killing of a tiger, rhino, and elephant.Barely 24 hours before the rhino was killed, forest officials discovered the carcass of a male tiger. The suspected cause of death is secondary poisoning, as up to ten cattle have died in the area after consuming grass laced with poisoned salt. Authorities believe the poisoned salt was set out by poachers to lure rhinos outside the park, and noted that if a tiger consumed any poisoned livestock, it would also be killed.A post-mortem examination to determine the tiger’s exact cause of death is being done by a team from the College of Veterinary Science, working with members of the Wildlife Crime Bureau.Sadly, on the same day, forest officials found the the carcass of a young elephant who had been shot. The tusks and trunk had been hacked off.Officials said it had been two years since an elephant had been killed by poachers in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong area.Authorities suspect poaching gang.Officials believe that a seasoned poacher is now based in Karbi Anglong and is taking advantage of local unrest to guide poachers into Kaziranga. Recently, guns were stolen from Kaziranga forest guards by suspected militants.Recently, UNESCO requested stronger anti-poaching measures for Kaziranga National Park, which is home to two-thirds of the world’s greater one-horned rhino population.Tiger, rhino, elephant poaching on the rise. The last few years have seen a tragic increase in the killing of tigers, rhino, and elephants. Many wildlife experts attribute these crimes to the recent rise of incomes in China, where there is an insatiable demand for tiger parts, rhino horn, and elephant ivory.A recent Financial Times article - Shopping habits of China’s suddenly wealthy - sounds yet another alarm for species already decimated by this demand, and points out that ivory is on the shopping list of China’s newly affluent.
… traditional Chinese tastes, combined with the explosion in wealth during the past decade, have created a rapacious and unsustainable call for the body parts of endangered species. The manufacture of traditional delicacies, ornaments and medicinal ingredients has helped to cut swathes through populations of sharks, elephants, seahorses and other species across the world – and that demand is only expected to increase. The link between increased poaching of tigers, rhino, and elephants and China’s rising affluence has become too much of a “coincidence” to ignore any longer: It’s time to take a closer look at this “coincidence” - before it’s too late.

  26. Saptarshi Bhattacharyya says:

Hey Lets all pledge for this cause rising above petty politics and caste and religion issues.

Lets spread word to whomever we can and SAVE OUR TIGERS

  27. Devika Singh says:

It is essential to save our forests and protect wildlife no mattar what the cost. I think that people should be reloctated out of forest areas by giving them adequate compensation. These wildlife reserves should be patrolled by well paid well armed and qualified forest officials .
The punishment for poaching should be very hefty finacially and in terms of long jail senstences
We have to do everything possible to protect our tigers and our forests.

  28. Anindita Kar says:

The Times Of India says…”many trails, few tails.Six days in tiger territory is time enough to spin many tales. But the few volunteers participating in the national tiger census realised there’s no guarantee the animal can be spotted roaming in the forests.”

The need of the hour is not the “..few volunteers..” but many, many more.A few more people means more aware,well-informed and people who really want and can contribute(they must) to save our National Animal.

The Tigers are not anymore the Man-eaters of the Kumaon…they have dwindled, and, instead are now living on the mercy of human beings. What a pity!!!Not to pity them, but to pity us…for our so called Tiger reserves,National Parks etc etc are falling prey to the poachers despite inumerable stringent laws to protect the animals that adorn our forests??!!

I really do want to be in an active campaign,I wish all of us to join hands and chalk out feasible, practical plans and strategies that can contribute to the fast-disappearing animals and their home(the forest).

Friends should we not already think of doing what needs to be done instead of depending on our irresponsible law-makers?

  29. saba khan says:

How inhuman of us that we are siting in our homes as a mute spectators.
the killing of these innocent animals won’t be stopped till each one of us will feel responsible for it.
we have to act now before its too late…………
have some mercy on these beautiful creatures whether its tiger or elephant or rhino.
have you ever thought wath we will show to the coming generation,
“Forest without trees and animals”.oh,can we really call it a forest………..

  31. Sue Ettmayr says:

I recently visited the Beijing Zoo in China. I was horrified at the conditions the animals find themselves. Horrific. The cats were all pacing up and down in their cages. So unutterably sad. To crown it all the magnificent tiger out in the fresh air was being pelted with stones from ignorant Chinese tourists. My godson (a South African) as I am, told me the Mandarin for “stop” is “ting”. We walked around to each of the perpetrators and shouted ‘ting’ at them. They felt WE were being rude. When are they going to catch a wake up in China?

  32. i m trying to help TIGERS of our Country by joining saveourtigres. if we didnt react now so may be in future we will see them only in PICTURE. i m trying to protect them r u?????????????

  34. Rajasekaran says:

I pledge my support to help the tiger survive. This should also reach the people living near the santuary or the forest area. Its a pity that poarchers who kill the tiger escape our law which doesnt seem to be stringent enough. Wake up people because A TIGER HAS GOT THE RIGHT TO LIVE too.

  39. Anindya K. Mukherjee says:

    Gentelmen,

I thought that why can’t we have a para-military force equipped with Night Vision Camera and other required tools with latest fireguns and why they won’t pay handsomely with benefits.

Also why they would not be rewarded cash incentive if they rescue tigers/wild animals and catch hold of potchers.

What happens if the state owned machinery been aided by Corporate Houses and gets tax rebate.

Why there won’t be any mechanism to adopt tigers and get tax-benefit.

It seems that the will is not right. Excuse me, but it seems upfront.

  40. Abhilasha Bakshi says:

Tigers are very important part of our ecosystem. Decreasing in their numbers will harm our whole ecology. Its humanity to save them but humans are killing them. Is this humanity? think

  46. Vidya says:

The first word that comes to my mind seeing this absolutely marvellous animal is AWE. Awe at the way nature created it.Awe at those stripes, varying in symmetry from another of its kind.Awe at its stealth.Awe at those fiercely fiery eyes.Awe at its sheer power and grandeur.Yes,there is something about this animal that even the king of the jungle himself misses by miles. It isn’t any wonder that William Blake was inspired to put down his words in admiration for this cat in his classic poem “Tiger, tiger burning bright….”…..one look at Stripey and in picture above, would make any heart melt. Except of course, for that filthy, cruel and heartless poacher around. He has a market to cater to,after all.

The greatest threat (and should I say at this stage, the sole threat) to this beautiful animal is known by the scientific name, homo sapiens.I feel completely ashamed to identify myself with my race in a situation like this.I feel the greatest mistake God had done in creating the universe was to give the power of speech to us humans.Such ungrateful and selfish creatures we’ve become. What right do we have to take lives when we can’t create them? Apart from spiritual questions like this,I would like to make an honest request to people outside —- the body parts of this animal cannot guarantee anything to improve your love life,or any other damn social status, believe you me.If you think it would, then in terms of evolution,we’re the ones that have progressed the most.Better to kill one another.Or discover more wonder drugs that would guarantee your never ending want for lust. That ways, the earth would become a better place to live in.

We have no strict laws to protect these beautiful creatures.Plus, our ‘chalta hai’ attitude will sure do wonders for its survival.I just couldn’t believe the number when I saw it first on screen on TV— 1411. What have we humans come to, really?

As long as the market for animal parts remain, the killing will go on.We have to crack down on these markets first. That’s the only way this can be stopped.

Take a heart guys, give every other animal on this earth a chance to live its life, and not in constant fear of death, pain and starvation. We have absolutely no right to take away another life when we haven’t been given the power to create one. The next time you look for that designer coat, a gold chain with a tiger tooth as its pendant or a lousy aphrodisiac which says its made of a tiger’s body part, or let alone any other animal, think a zillion times. It really isn’t worth what it is you see and remember, what goes around, comes around.

  47. Stuti says:

This situation shows how cruel the human beings are. Sometimes it seems God’s biggest mistake is to create Human Beings who kill other living beings just for their fun. So cruel, so Brutal…let us save all the birds and animals before they start extincting one by one. Let us grow more trees too.

  48. Swarup Ghosh says:

Please particapate and save the tigers from getting ruined

  49. sunit says:

Hi, I have been hearing about tigers are keot in teir natural habitat if yes then why we are loosing these tigers. Are we waiting for the day when we tell our grand children that there were tigers on this lanet the same way we are told about the dinosaurs…..

  50. Sugandh says:

    Citizens Of India,

I Am Feeling So Disturbed When I Knew There Are Only 1411 TIGERS LEFT. The Govt. Has Made Many National Parks To Protect Them But Nothing Is Happening. We are Killing Tigers For Our Benefit But Humans Don’t Know That These All Activities Could Lead Us To Extinct The Most Energetic And Beautiful Mammal. I Beg To Each Citizen Of India To SAVE OUR NATIONAL ANIMAL, SAVE OUR TIGERS.

I Beg Again And Again, Please Save Our Tigers.
