Just 1411 left.

Just 1411 left.

Our national animal is fighting for its life.

From around 40,000 at the turn of the last century, there are just 1411 tigers left in India.

If we don’t act now, we could lose this part of our heritage forever.

Speak up, blog, share the concern, stay informed… Every little bit helps.

Where is the next step? We are just seeing the awareness being spread but is the government thinking on banning the places from public visit when all this is happening?

Aircel came with an initiative with WWF, hope the animal welfare groups come with a strategy that saves the tiger kingdom.

    Here’s my part - http://www.chetanbhawani.com/2010/02/1411-tigers/

    hi! Comrades

first of all i want to thank Aircel and team for this initiative “SAVE OUR TIGERS”. Think what we are going to leave for our future generations,if we will not raise the voice, they will going to see the big cat only in pics. And what about ecology balance. So please save tigers and work for tigers at your own level.

“Think if some more intelligant and powerfull species than HUMAN BEINGS come into existance, and will do same to us like we are doing to our animals, and they destroy our houses ,they take our food, and we are wondering here and there scared, and helpless.”

that’s the situation with our tigers,so “SAVE OUR TIGERS”

  7. Nishtha Gupta says:

    hi everybody
I’m Nishtha from class VI. i’m really thankful to aircel for starting this initiative. I hope that this initiative would help in saving our national animal and its habitat. At the beginning of this century there were about 40000 but the number has decreased to 1411. In november i went to Jim Corbet and i had expected to see a tiger but we could not find any of them. The tiger has become an endangered species just because of us. If the action to save tigers is not taken at the correct time , a day will come when they would be read in books & on computer screens. SAVE OUR TIGERS…….

  8. Nakul says:

I reuest every true lover of stripey to do some changes and give an wake up call to our sleeping goverment.

Tiger is a majestic, self assured, charismatic and ferocious animal. Imagine our world without this beautiful creature! We don’t want to have a situation where tigers are shown to our children only in the Zoos. The beauty of Tiger is when it goes for the kill in the wild.

What needs to be done? India is a huge country. And only 38 Tiger reserves??? Earlier India was poor and could not spend on creating more Tiger reserves. Now our Government coffers are full if not overflowing. Let us appeal for more than 50 Tiger reserves in India by 2014.

  13. Rohit says:

It is really a great initiative to save tigers.

IT IS THE MOST WONDERFUL GIFT OF GOD TO US. AND WE SHOULD NOT THROW IT APART. WE HAVE TO SHOW MORE SECURITY CONCERNS AND ENSURE SEVERE PUNISHMENTS FOR POACHERS LIKE LIFE IMPRISONMENT.WE HAVE TO DRAW THE GOVERNMENTS FOCUS TO THIS SOMEHOW.OTHERWISE IT WILL NOT HOLD AT ALL. GOVERNMENT COOPERATION IS MUST AS IT IS A CASE OF NATIONAL ISSUE.

  15. Diah Deepak S says:

There can’t be anything worse than, when we see our tigers only in Discovery or NG Channel under extinct animals lists. Time has come when Govt need to think and take very strong decisions against those poachers and poaching, so same could be an example for others, would appreciate if poachers are shot in the public. Moreover people/govt officials needs to perished maximum, who helped these poachers to get things easy. Do need to start rehablitation process at the earliest. Would be doing anything to support this noble cause.

  19. Nishtha Mamgain says:

    hello to one and all…

Are we just gonna sit nd sympathize with the wretched condition of OUR NATIONAL ANIMAL.It’s time ppl cm out of their nutshells nd contribute(in any possible way) for the cause.v cnt jst xpect the govt 2 take necessary steps, rather WE need to push dem to listen to the wake up call nd tak charge of the situation.instead of fiting ovr worthless issues nd playing foul politics our so called representatives seriously need to act upon this grave issue.
it is saddening that tigers, whom v cal our national animal are endangered or to b precise on the verge of extinction and the worst part is that their biggest threat are WE human beings and our activities.now who is more ferocious?Well.. v all knw the answer.it’s ironical that v humans are losing the human touch..forgetting wat being human is.v need to protect the tigers nd their natural habitat.there has to b an end to the insatiable greed of man lest v r afflicted by nature’s curse.if v dnt stop nw,then tigers fr us will b history.
i am glad, not only abt the initiative taken up by aircel bt also abt the tremendous support shown by the citizens of our country.

Wow! 2253 responses. I was just doing the math. If each of us spread the word to 5 friends & they in turn to 5 of their friends, we’ll have 50,000+ people involved. Some of us with a heart will voice their heart loud enough, just like shahrukh has roared back at the tigers in mumbai.
Tigers have only one hope left. US.

Thanks for the thought provoking cub ad. It got me restless enough to voice my thoughts.

  21. Kushal says:

Tiger is a majestic animal and is the symbol of power. We have to protect our national animal at any cost. Goverment is spending so much amount on animal welfare but little has been done rest all money had been eaten up by ministers for there benefits. Why don’t the goverment spend money on the radio collaring of the tiger in india so that the central team in the country could trace the tiger in the jungles.
Proper security channel has to be in place, as the forest guard in india for the name sake as old Guns compare to the shospicated Guns of the tiger hunter. Goverment should have a strict rules considering the situation same like for the Giant panda in China. Goverment offical are also not considering the worst situation till yet as they consider that there are enough tigers in the jungle like Sariska (No Tigers). We should have the same security system in india like for the Lion in south africa. We want our future generation to see these majestic animal in jungle and not in photo or Zoo

  22. Tiger conservation requires determined efforts by the government. As in any government initiative this will also fail if a toothless beureaucrat runs the show. We need very strong and determined people to make this change happen. It needs a judiciary intervention, a government resolve, empowerment of tribals, vast tracts of forest lands to make this happen. This is too critical to be created into a political agenda or a center - state issue.
Since ministers and top leaders are only bothered about the next election and not India, its time citizens should form forums and drive government mad on pressing issues, so that they act. No more web stuff, time has come to take things down to the streets.
We make tiger as mascot for games, and nothing else.

  23. Pardeep Barnala says:

    Hii everyone . .

Its really a very wonderful effort by aircel to generate awareness among we people towards reducing population of tigers. More important thing is not just to add long comments here only but to to see our inner selves whether we are serious about this. B’cos until we don’t stop usage of things made from animal skins/teeth,this all will be useless. Simply,if we create demand in market, you are sure to get supply. Things ma be in the form of leather belts, purses and many other articles. This is not only related to tigers but to many other endagered species that our children are not going to see some day. So, awareness and commitment is required at very basic level. Otherwise tigers will continue to reduce even after this powerfull effort. Let us all give a strong push with aircel !!!

  24. I asked people how much was a killed tiger was worth. Many didn’t know. Somebody confidently put the figure at Rs. 5 Lakhs which includes skin, bones, teeth, etc. Now if this figure is right there are 4411 tigers left and the total value comes to Rs. 2000 Crores!!! No wonder. This means unscrupulous elements are not going to leave this trade. There must be very powerful people behind it. So, I feel that a LIVING TIGER must be made worth more than a dead one. Only powerful industrial lobbies can do this. Because emotions wont move poachers. Only money equations can. They must be asked as to what they’ll do if the Tiger population disappears. No Tiger No money. The ball is in national and international corporate courts. They have the money muscle, the means and the power to withstand the poacher nexus. Meanwhile they can get our citizens to rally around their projects like AIRCEL is doing.

Who would have thought this inconsequential number would stir peoples’ heart like this.
Why are we hell bent on destroying the wild life for idiotic wishes of ours. Tigers are the most Majestic of animals ever to grace this earth. The poise, the grace the aura of a tiger can only be felt. I don’t think there are words to describe. And we must make sure that next generations are able to see the animal live and in habitat and not just as an extinct specie in some thesis book.
One time tigers were the pride of our country. And now a number of mere 1411. Shocking and devastating lets stop people from ending this atrocity against such a lovely animal.
The Tiger Must survive…….. Imagine the Jungle Book without the ferocious Sher Khan. Does the book have any charm then…..!!!!!
Ladies and gentlemen wake up and stand out as one for this right cause. Lets pledge that we will help in every way we can to help these tigers survive. I hope the NGO’s like WWF are able to complete this task. Our pity politicians too must show willfulness to make this project successful in practical and not on just paperwork.

  31. Ankit Choudhary says:

    hello.. Everyone
first thanks to Aircel, they are giving us say about nation pride
    “Jaago Indians Jaago”
actually I saw a advertise of “Save our Tiger” by Aircel
“the baby tiger is waiting for his mother….” after this add tears come in my eyes and then my mom said why u r crying “Beta”
then I thought here my mom :(
but there a small baby tiger is waiting(crying) for his mom.
Plz do something We all Indian are with “U”.

if we are able to see tiger’s lets make our child/grandchild not to imagine that
how would be tiger’s appearing let’s gift them beauty of nature not the bondage of imagination.
so save tiger’s to make upcoming generation of our’s to proud on us…

    From, “INDIAN”

  32. Shriya says:

Do u know what do our national animal needs? Well, it needs more security & safety. so we need more forest guards who can be trusted.

  33. Priya Punjabi-Day 2 says:

Each day writting a simple blog ..can it save tigers??? how can we make sure that the money is rightly going for the said purpose..these questions hit a layman everyday …yet just in a Hope that one day even the smallest of help will save tigers I am drawn towards writing a blog :)

I also feel that there can be campaigns in schools and colleges to save tigers which will go a long way to enrich and take this project ahead..

I would like to wish good luck to Aircel for this initiative..

  34. AJ says:

It is astonishing to know that number of tigers left has become just 3.5% of what it was at the turn of last century. It is good to realize this fact before it too late and appreciate the promotions that are being done to bring general awareness.
The people of india needs to know that the national animal is becoming extinct. It is the duty of every single citizen to ban the use, sale and purchase of items made from skin etc. of tigers and not to get involved with any activity related to export of items. We can sit and just voice our concern but ultimately its the government who had to open its eyes and catch the poarchers so that poarchery can be stopped.
Tiger is symbolizes vigor, passion and strength. Let us all show same vigor and passion and make all possible efforts to save this beautiful creature. Let our descendants have the enjoyment to see this animal too and praise it.

  35. Hi Everyone!

Really it a serious matter that today our tigers stand on the limit of extinctrion. But it is us who can save them. Ofcourse Govt has made a no. of policies and rule to save the indian tigers, but it is us who to follows it. Tiger is decalred as national animal of country. Today situation is so critical that our national animal is going to lost its identity. so, its our moral responsibility to save our tigers. Due to our future generation can see them and coukld be able to know that the word”Tiger”. Moreover, it is natural right of everyliving wold to live long.

So, dear friends join tha hands together to save our tigers

    Be Tiger! Save Tiger

  36. mahesh surve says:

There are 1411 tigers has left in india..thanx aircel for such wonderful initiative..,we human should promise not to hunt in forent ,,should not cut the forest …robbing off their right to live..built Tiger Farms for selling their products,We have to make a difference now, else there wouldnt be any Tiger or any animal left in the forests/jungles in the next decade. I hope that this initiative would help in saving our national animal and its habitat.
….i am glad, not only abt the initiative taken up by aircel bt also abt the tremendous support shown by the citizens of our country.
    get going India!!

save our tigerss plzz stop hunting…

  37. Santosh Paul says:

Please find herewith some activities to be Done to Save the Tiger:
    - Local institutions and people Scientists who were closely involved in managing tigers at the local level, pointed out an important lesson more than a decade ago: unless local community needs are met, conservation of the tiger will not succeed and protected areas will perish. Therefore, conservation programmes

must reconcile the interests of people and tigers. In most situations, a sustainable tiger conservation strategy cannot be achieved without the full participation and collective action of individual rural households whose livelihoods depend on rights of access and use of the forests where tigers live.

    - Technologies for conservation of resources There already exists a wide range of technologies and practices in forest and watershed management and agriculture, both traditional and new, for conservation of resources. The biological processes that regenerate forests and make agriculture less damaging to tiger habitats take time to become established

    - Use of external institutions Institutions, such as NGOs, government departments, and banks, can facilitate processes by which local people develop their sense of ownership and commitment. When little effort is made to build local skills, interest, and capacity, people have no interest or stake in maintaining structures or practices once the incentives for conservation stop. Success hinges on people’s participation in planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation, which leads to the formation of new institutions or the strengthening of existing ones

    - Conservation of tiger habitat and of prey In many areas peripheral to tiger habitat, grazing lands for livestock have been converted to crops or degraded by excessive use; livestock is of poor quality and of poor productivity; wood for fuel and building has been exhausted; and sources of income are limited. The rehabilitation of the natural resource base of local people is essential if they are not to seek their requirements in protected areas. This requires ecodevelopment with the support and cooperation of specialized government organs and the non-governmental conservation community.

  38. Mayuk Dasgupta says:

    “Tiger Tiger. Burning bright,
    In the forests of the night;
    What immortal hand or eye.
    Could frame thy fearful symmetry?”

From the poem “Tiger” by William Blake

It is quite unfortunate to see such wilderness in our country to protect our National animal. I think India has the habit of showing a callous attitude for all and every such thing which we intend to take pride upon. Be it the projecting the great Taj or the delta land in sunderbans or fighting to save the nilgiris heritage train, all the political parties in India till now has failed in keeping up to the expectations.

It is really a shame on our part as a nation to react after such a long time on such a sensitive issue. I am not in a mode to agree to the fact that our national parks and reserve forests are so incapable to fight the poachers and animal traffickers that we have lost almost 80% of our tigers to the hands of such unscrupulous blood bath.

It shows the incompetence of the govt. and it is mere lack of seriousness which has brought the country to such shameful statistics. I am sure the fate of many more species is also in the same line. Don’t get amazed if one fine morning you find the famous herd of the lions in the Gir forest vanished or the olive ridleys in the Indian coast disappeared. The current situation has sent an alarm to us and it is high time that we woke up and raise our voice for the cause to save our heritage.

Let us not cut a sorry figure to our next generation saying that like the dinosaurs of the past who were the victims of the natural destruction, mankind was responsible and the actual cause for the extinction for the mighty and royal animal called ‘TIGER’.

    Let’s save our tigers!!!!

  39. Pranjal says:

Only 1411 left?? Isnt it a shame. I am just so sad as I realize that the national animal of our country is on the verge of getting extinct. Extinct like the Dino’s..?? I know we were not there to help save the Dino’s but I guess Saving our tigers wouldn’t be that difficult.

It makes me weep when I think about the next generation. They would be taught differently than we were, that the national animal of India is no longer The Tiger. Cant dare to guess who would be the next one to share the label, … then… Because we would cry when a pet dog dies but never shed a tear for the national animal of our beloved country getting extinct.

When young, I had a nightmare of a tiger chasing me. And also of, being so very scared to death. But I guess if the tigers get extinct I would laugh at myself or anyone who had a similar dream, as I was scared of the animal who was nearly extinct and couldn’t be saved by such a great, greatest of all animals the human. It’s a saddening thing.
You are doing a great deal by helping support the Tigers. I would also love to be a helping hand in this good cause and I would be more than happy to help the Tigers survive, then I would also be more proud to be an Indian, once again as I saved my national animal. I hope all Indians are awakened and try to be ready to help tigers live.

I would enjoy to see the dream of being chased by tiger again people, please pray. I will do the same.

  40. Manoj Jaiswal says:

First of all I’d like to Thanks AIRCEL for this life saving initiative. Tiger, our national animal is about to disappear from our country. If we lost our tigers it would not be good for our country as well as for human being bcoz tiger is the main part of our nature’s life cycle. it causes the disbalance in the life cycle.
Lets come together join our hands for saving GOD’s one of the finest creature of the earth.

SAVE OUR TIGERS ONLY 1411 LEFT.

As soon as my exams get over dis may i m going to sriska n donate wat ever i can… Cmon india dikha do !!
as far as ur article is concerned it is painful o read about tigers… i hop our little help can save them!!

  42. Ram says:

    Dear all

We have only 1411 tigers left in the world when i saw this its very sad and shocking for me .Tigers are wonderful animal in the world and we all enjoy by seeing that in a zoological park in different parts of the world ,when im switching on discovery or animal planet i see tigers which is not possible to see directly quite often if we have to see it we have to protect it by taking care like our child.Kids to older people they are enjoying by seeing the tiger by the way it reacts ,amazing to watch in a national park .What steps we have to take and to follow to protect this lovley animal,Reserved forest should be more alerted and take a close look on animal which is rightly protected and stop hunting it that is the worst thing to do , Always feed it and take care …

  43. Hi ,

Thankx to aircel for taking such initiatives, as i am leaving in madhya pradesh, the central state of India, being surrounded by 5 national parks, can see how people use to visit these parks just because of the presence of these big cats. It is backbone of the tourism in central India. We all are committed to spread the words and ask everyone to protect our national animal.

Make the way for the king.. !!

  44. Hallo,
I am requesting everyone to save the tigers as because they are precious or only 1411 are left but because if tigers are are extinct then the jungles will be destroyed very soon as tigers only keep the balance of a jungle so this is the last chance left to us ,If we donot take the any steps the every living thing in this world will be extinct .Firstly we should raise a movement to compel the Indian government so that the tiger prochers should be sentenced to death ,if caught red handed

  45. Maansi says:

This is shameful for our country! I don’t think any of us want to be known as the people who endangered their own national animal. I strongly believe that no animal should be harmed for fur or medical uses. Its disgusting! Aircel’s initiative is good and should be supported. I plan to donate and I hope those reading this will too! The state of the amount of tigersleft is too sad and shocking! And just writing blogs on websites and becoming a fan of the Facebook/ Twitter pages won’t help, you must write to the Govt. of India, or hold a charity sale. I plan on collecting moneyfrommy friends and relatives and donating it to the Save The Tigers. I have previously helped raisemoney for unicef and plan on doing it for this too!!!

Tiger in India is fighting his last battle for survival. Help him win this……
India has a privilege to home a wide variety of natural flora and fauna. It’s the home of one of the most majestic animals to walk on the face of this earth ” TIGER ”
The most disheartening part is that, we have failed to understand and value it. The selfish need of man has brought this animal on the verge of extinction. With only a few hundred of these mammals left in the wild, the tiger is fighting it’s last battle for survival in the wild, and if this continues, the “Large Hearted Gentleman”, as Jim Corbett called him, will survive only in books & story tales. Help this majestic animal fight its last battle for survival. Understand the importance of it. And then let the day dawn, when you proudly show your child, one of the most magnificent animal on the face of this earth,” TIGER”

  47. gauri says:

It is heartwarming to see such support against tiger extinction. But i feel each one of us should get more involved..and when i say involved i dont mean only blogging and showing online support..which is good but not enough..! Its high time we actually start doing something about it before its too late!

  48. Sameer says:

The most disheartening part from our Gov. and Project Tiger (Indian Gov.) is that no action taken against the DFO. Who is responsible for the tack care of the Jungle & Jungle animals.

  49. dear all,
its great to see that all of us really care for our national animal and want to save it .
but sorry to say that very few are coming up with a solution. just showing a concern for them
wont stop them from being shorted. almost every citizen who is well educated, resident of a
city full of affordable basic amenities, knows and realizes the importance of jungle and tigers.
now the immediate step should be spreading this message in the rural areas and specially the areas
in and around the jungles, sanctuaries, national parks, reservoirs etc. people here are so poor that
they get ready to help the hunters for even a sum of rs. 100.
please see and guide us how this awareness can reach such backward areas.
    love u tigers,
barkha, shone, mannu, mann, moru, bulbul.

Some Information about our Wild Life
India has a rich natural heritage and a long tradition of conservation. The ashram (hermitages) of the great sages, which were the seats of learning in ancient times, was almost always located in sylvan surroundings that symbolized the conservation ethics of the day. Indian mythology is replete with references to people’s regard and love for wild animals. Different animals and birds were associated with different gods as their servants and vehicles. These animals and birds, therefore, were held sacred by various communities, which ensured their protection. Kautilya in his Arthashastra promulgated the first recorded game laws in the third century Be. In the year 252 Be, Emperor Ashoka passed laws for the protection of many types of animals and forests. These laws created what may well be the earliest instances of protected areas as we call them today.
Though love and respect for nature is an integral part of India’s culture, the country today confronts the sad paradox of fast disappearing wildlife. A typical developing country, modern India struggles with the stiff challenge of finding solutions to development problems. But some solutions that have been worked out pose serious threats to the country’s wildlife. Human population pressure, widespread industrialization, hunger for land and the crushing pressure exerted on the forests by livestock and by people’s needs for firewood and small timber are the main causes of the present plight of wildlife. The result is there for everyone to see: our prime forests and wildlife reduced to a shadow of their former self. India has already lost several species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and other life forms. As so little is known about the actual biological diversity of the country, we may not even be fully cognizant of the true extent of the loss and can only mourn the few well-known examples of the tragic extinction of wild animals and birds such as the Indian Cheetah, the Mountain Quail, or the Pink-headed Duck.

The population of the tiger which was believed to be around 40,000 by some experts only a century ago was down to only 1,411 animals by 2010. The Asiatic lion, which adorns the country’s national emblem, is today confined to a small pocket in the Gir forests of Gujarat. A number of deer species like the hangul of Kashmir, the barasingha of Madhya Pradesh, the brow-antlered deer of Manipur, and antelope like the Himalayan - all adorn the list of endangered species. In fact, the brow-antlered deer whose number in the wild was estimated to be only 18 in 1977 has the dubious distinction of being the most endangered deer in the world. Blackbuck, the graceful antelope of the Indian plains, was found in its thousands barely 50 years ago. It is now confined to small pockets where it survives only under strict protection. The Great Indian Bustard and the White-winged Wood Duck have dwindled to precarious numbers. The beautiful Siberian Crane is a winter visitor to the Bharatpur Sanctuary in Rajasthan. Its visit to this sanctuary dwindled to just 41 birds, as reported, in the winter of 1978-79. The Gangetic gharial, the marsh mugger and the estuarine crocodile have all been hunted down to near extinction. These are only a few examples; there are many more species of wild animals and birds that are on the verge of extinction. If we are complacent towards conservation many of these beautiful creatures will be wiped out in the near future.

It was only in the early 1970s that the first actions were taken to arrest the declining trend in wildlife, and concern for nature conservation was reflected to a certain extent in the planning and development processes. Many significant initiatives in wildlife conservation have been taken since then. These include:
The enactment of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and, subsequently, the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 ,the inclusion of wildlife conservation in the Concurrent List of the Constitution, the enlargement of the network of national parks and sanctuaries.
The launch of Project Tiger in 1973.
    The Crocodile Breeding Project, 1975;

    Project Elephant, early 1991;

    Project Hangul, 1970;

Manipur Brow-antlered Deer Conservation Project, 1973, regulation of wildlife trade and commerce, the strengthening of education and training facilities, which culminated in the establishment of the Wildlife Institute of India; and various efforts to increase general awareness about nature conservation.
