Our national animal is fighting for its life.
From around 40,000 at the turn of the last century, there are just 1411 tigers left in India.
If we don’t act now, we could lose this part of our heritage forever.
Speak up, blog, share the concern, stay informed… Every little bit helps.

Watch this space for updates from Stripey, the tiger cub.
Truly a great initiative, now its our responsibility as an Indian to help for its success. Until and unless everyone understands his/her responsibility this problem cannot be solved.
Even if some poachers are caught still a lot escape easily by bribing the officials. Government should make officials responsible for such killlings and reduction in tiger population. They should also be punsihed appropriately for negligence to carry out their duty properly. Also more severe punsihment must be decide for poachers. More Forest officers must be deployed with incentives to catch poachers and prevent poaching.
Steps not taken now will have a serious impact in near future. Extinction of tigers will disturb the whole eco chain. And killings will not stop there only. Other animals will be the next target. Peacock, Elephants, snakes, crocodiles etc none of them would be spared by poachers. Then the whole ecology will get damaged and destroyed.
Actions have to be strict, people need to be aware and responsible, media must spread more awareness and children must be educated about this right from the beginning. Otherwise the day is not far when we will have to see our precious wildlife in pictures and movies only. And no one else, but we oursleves would be responsible for all this. Its time to act now and immediately otherwise it would be too late.
Come together and Cooperate to Change the scenario, let our wildlife flourish again as was earlier and hope that we can cherish those moments again in near future.

I SAW THE AD ON TV AND FELT REALLY SAD AS OUR NATIONAL ANIMAL,OUR NATIONAL HERITAGE IS DISAPPPEARING SO FAST. AIRCEL HAS DONE A REAL GOOD JOB BY SPREADING THE AWARENESS. TIGERS ARE ON THE VERGE OF EXTINCTION THUS ITS A HIGH TIME WE SHOULD GET INVOLVED SO THAT OUR NATIONAL ANIMAL CAN SURVIVE . WE HAVE TO TAKE SOME CONCRETE STEPS TO PREVENT STOP THE RECKLESS HUNTING OF TIGERS.
NOT EVERYONE DOES THIS THUS WE HAVE TO SPREAD THE AWARENESS AMONG COMMON PEOPLE. WE HAVE CONVINCE PEOPLE TO STOP BUYING TIGER PRODUCTS. ITS A HIGH TIME SO PULL UP YOUR SOCKS AND “SAVE OUR TIGERS”.
THANK YOU……………………….

Its truly a great initiative and I really look forward of spreading my words with in a large number of people to educate them about our national heritage.
This is a great initiative. We just cannot let tigers disappear. This beautiful animal is more than just another animal for us. It is out pride, our heritage. It’s time we realize that we can not afford to just wait and watch for government policies to protect the tigers. We need to blow the whistle and get actively involved in whatever way we can.
Hey guys please do visit my video in the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb4Y0gYSmm8
I Expect your replies and feedback.
dear all tiger lovers,
It is of deep concern that we are losing this majestic animal as well as other endangered species very fast and i fear even we can save the left ones coz if we see the graphs we ve lost them very fast, now i suppose indian govt. has to take some very strict actions to save this national animal otherwise as the not very old saying goes that we have to show our children’s only the pictures of this fantastic beast.Once again i urge the people and the govt. to save our tigers.
deeply hurted
tiger lover
Dear All,
It is heart whelming to see such kind of response. I guess every wild animal has a right to live as we are. It’s an earnest request to please come forward and do your bit from saving tigers & other animals who are on the verge of extinction. I believe if all of us join this wonderful initiative we can make a difference, we have to. So please join us, roar and help us to protect our beloved wildlife. Dont be late, otherwise our children will only see the pictures. Make an effort to contribute towards the Tiger Conservation. Do it and be a True Indian.
Hello Everybody to whoever seeing my comment, first and foremost i should like to congratulate and appreciate the Initiative taken by Aircel. now coming on to the number of Tiger’s left in india, i would like you guys to go watch Discovery and NGC channels and you would be dumbstuck and surprised to know that 1411 is the not the actual number of tigers left, its just an assumed calculation taken on the basis of the footprints of Tigers, one of the best wildlife photographer and conservative has proved it and its an hour documentary, i dont actually remember his name, but the point i am trying to prove is that 1411 is a false number given by the indian govt, we have some hundreds of tiger’s left all over india, and the main cause is the poaching done for money by the great poachers like Totha Ram and others, everytime they hunt and get scot free because of our legal system, if u dont believe me ask our tiger scientist who are working on tigers since ages like Raghu Chundawat and Ullas Karanth. guys we gotta adopt a diff sytem to count the number of tigers, the reason i’ve come up with this is to let you know that the Extinction of tigers is not serious its DAMN SERIOUS. i hope we get any response on this!
Save the Tiger & let our ecosystem protect us!

Dear All,
This is really a nice step towards creating a awareness regarding saving our national animal’s identity on this planet. We must spread it all over before our tigers disappears from the planet.
Pls. help to create awareness.
Dear friends,
Its really nice to see the effort to save our national animal. Kudos to Aircel and WWF to take this initiative. I am doing my part to make people aware of this serious issue. Lets join our hands to let all the people know regarding this initiative. I have seen Bala’s coment, Yes i have also seen the same news in T.V and it was really shocking. If this is the condition then our next generations would be able to recognise Tigers only by their Tiger shapped soft toys. So plz don’t let it be happen.
So do our best to save our Tigers.
Thank You India for your Good Responce…………………………………
Thanks to Aircel, WWF & Our Indian Government Project on Saving Tigers.

Hello To All…….
First Of All a big big thanks to that persons who gave the ad on TV about the Tigers…….the main cause for this vanishing of tigers is our population………becoz the forests becoming small due to population……..some villages are very near to the living place of tigers like a sundarban reserve is very near to the village………..such kind of population is not a sign of a properous country……..if our population increasing in this way then not only a Tigers other animals will also gonna be extinct from our country……so dear friends from my opinion first of all we have to control our population…..which is increasing in rapid way…….
and another is that i am not very useful for this initiative becoz my age is just 17 year…….i am doing my diploma in electronics and communication becozz of animals………because i have to make a radio collars and other objects that will be useful for biologists….because the biologists have to use a radio collar for many animalsto easily find them in forests and manage their population in forests….thats why i am feeling that it is only thing that i do for our tigers………….
Thanks

Hie everyone…….. Its really great that atlast somebody realised that there is really a need to help our national animal survive…….. and its also very good to see that so many people of India had joined hands to raise a voice for such a cause…… i am also very honoured to join this organisation and i pleadge that whatever and however possible i will accompany you and stand by you for this noble cause……….
It’s shame for us that our national animal are living under threat. Even people are also not interested in saving tigers,we all are responsible for this situation …… Govt. shoud make tough law against hunters …..according to me they shoud be sentenced imprisonment for life time……I hope that people wud be concerned on this issue and we don’t lose our tigers……..the initiatives taken by AIRCEL are remarkable………
India is home to the world’s largest population of tigers in the wild.[77] According to the World Wildlife Fund, of the 3,500 tigers around the world, 1,400 are found in India.[78] A major concerted conservation effort, known as Project Tiger, has been underway since 1973, which was initially spearheaded by Indira Gandhi. The fundamental accomplishment has been the establishment of over 25 well-monitored tiger reserves in reclaimed land where human development is categorically forbidden. The program has been credited with tripling the number of wild Bengal tigers from roughly 1,200 in 1973 to over 3,500 in the 1990s. However, a tiger census carried out in 2007, whose report was published on February 12, 2008, stated that the wild tiger population in India declined by 60% to approximately 1,411.[79] It is noted in the report that the decrease of tiger population can be attributed directly to poaching.[80]
Following the release of the report, the Indian government pledged $153 million to further fund the Project Tiger initiative, set-up a Tiger Protection Force to combat poachers, and fund the relocation of up to 200,000 villagers to minimise human-tiger interaction.[81] Additionally, eight new tiger reserves in India are being set up.[82] Indian officials successfully started a project to reintroduce the tigers into the Sariska Tiger Reserve.[83] The Ranthambore National Park is often cited as a major success by Indian officials against poaching.[84]
Congratulations to all the poeple who thought of starting this only of its kind project in India. My thinking or my comments may be a little bit harsh but are practical. if Govt. or any kind of private organisations should punish the poachers with the help of the local people in such a way that other poachers should be afraid of doing this henious act of killing such a beautiful and majestic animal. Instead the forest officials should catch the poachers and reward the informers more than the amount which they will get from teh poachers for informing the animlas hideouts. so if the informers get more the money then they will 100% support the forest officials and help in finding out the poachers. then teh poacghers should be punished in such a way that they should suffer so much pain which they gave to the tigers while killing them. i have seen lot of such cases of hunting as i am a animal and jungle lover and have been lot of times in the forests. also i think that the Govt. or the NGOS like this should undertake to teach and express to the local people the importance of the wildlife and also the importance of not killing the tiger.
also big corporates like Aicel who is supporting this project should lend a financial hand to reward the informers who will give the information about the poachers.
also Govt. should keep a very vigil eye on the trade of the body parts of the Tigers as this trade goes on with the help of the local officials only.
HI FRIENDS,
Its a really a very nice effort to save our tiger.its really a matter of concern that our royal animal is meeting its death, surely a time will come when we will show our children the photos and stuffed statues of tigers the same way we see dinosaurs today!let us try to prevent it!……………………………………………………………….i tink government should take the following steps:
{1}strict action should be taken against tiger trade and hunting{which persists even today}
{2}people living near the tiger reserves should be told about the tigers
{3}captive breeding should be undertaken in each state
[with exchange of tigers}
{4} people should be educated about tigers, especially children to create a positive hands as the future is there in their hands!
{5}immediate steps should be taken
………………………………………………..I WOULD SUGGEST EVERYONE TO READ THE BOOK “FANFARE FOR A TIGER”……………………………………
All the Nature Lovers,
Millions of heart felt accolades for the move that Aircel has initiated. Wild life (I am not restricting to tigers only) is the part and parcel of this surrounding environment and the survival of Manking lies in the survival of wild life. Life on the earth is not possible unless we preserve the wildlife, why only preserve, we must ensure their growth, may be gradually but certainly. this is very much innate to our lifeline. the wild life equally requires preservation and growth of green belt on this earth.
I would like to pose a question to all of us (to the entire mankind) is it not our profound duty to preserve the nature’s pride i.e. Tigers, why only tigers, all the BIG CATS. We protect and care for our material belongings which can be replaced if lost but mind well if this treasure of nature is lost (1411 census clearly reflects that they are almost on the verge of extinction) we cannot resurrect them and imagine what our future generation will say (rather blame us) for our inaction.
Please, Please for God’s sake wake up and take a vow that we will put in all the best and sincere efforts for afforestation and ensuring that the green belts become the safe abode for Tigers.
Friends, I have a vital sugestion to make with regard to saving of nature i.e. at seminars, conferences, valentine days, or similar occasion instead of offering Bouquets, we must offer a green plant in a pot as a gift which I am sure that the recepient will love to have it and in turn it will add to greenery than destroying it.
jai Hind, Jai and Green Tigerful Bharat.
hi everyone
united we stand divided we fall this should be our motto while raising our raising our voice against the illeagal hunting of the tigers. we should not only write but do something or the other in order to save what is our national animal. if this is the condition of our national animal what will be the chances of the other animals. we say ourselves to be devloping but killing anyone does not mean progress it is simply meant selfish incorporative mind. lets pledge not only to save tigers but also to save our natural heritage which has since been preserved by our fathers and forefathers. holding away seminars and awareness programmes are now not a measure. lets stand and shout out from where are. lets think ourselves to be the representative of the tigers and else. just save them not for yourselves but fot the sake of earning a good deed in your life. continuing later since this effort must continue and enlarge to cover more ne aspects ………………
Last Tiger dies in captivity! ~ Top 5 Reasons why it happened
03 Feb 2014
What was feared and dreaded for so long by all, has come to pass. The last tiger died due to illness in the Kolkata Zoo.
With it the species of “wild” Indian tigers has gone extinct. The remains of the Tigers are with the scientists, who are still trying to clone this animal successfully.
On this dark day, one can’t help, but look into the facts as to why the tiger could not survive the battle… and why did Indians, both the government and people not take any concrete moves to save the animal.
Some of the main causes that have come out after our research are listed below -
Reason No.5
#5. One of the biggest mistakes the Government made was to declare the tiger as the “National Animal”.
Had they declared the Tiger as a Maharastrian, or a Punjabi or a Gujarati or a Goan or a Telengana or a Kashmiri, or a Bihari or a Madrasi or Kannada or Bengali or Keralite or North-East or Rajasthani.. . basically any regional state belonging, then that state’s people would have gone on “fast-undo-death” , would have started riots, laid down their lives, burnt all state buses…but would have saved each and every tiger from dying.
But Unfortunately for the tiger….it was slated as the national animal, each Indian (if there is actually a real entity like that) did nothing, as basically, each Maharashtrian was waiting for the Punjabi, who was waiting for the Gujarati, so on and so forth to save the tiger, unfortunately no one came to the tigers rescue… and the result is before us.
—
Reason No.4
#4 Another big mistake the Government made was by not assigning the special status of “Minority” on the Tigers.
Had the tiger been assigned “minority” status.. then each tiger death, irrespective of it being natural / un-natural, would have been termed as a death of democracy and fatwas would have been issued against poachers and those who poisoned tigers would be the direct enemies of Jehadi’s from Pakistan and Afghanistan. .. basically some real bad people with guns and no lives… the kinds, you don’t want to /edit/ off!!
But the government didn’t do that… the tiger was largely seen as a National symbol.. and hence neither the minority nor the majority gave a /edit/ for it!
—
Reason No.3
#3. But the biggest mistake by far the Government made, was by not declaring the Tiger as a “SC/ST”.
Mayawati alone with all her money would have made sure that each and every tiger was relocated safely to Uttar Pradesh and with her 4000 crore worth parks nearly ready (all over UP) with special security forces in place, she would have converted all of them into safe tiger sanctuaries. ..and the tigers would have not only survived, but would have had a luxurious life.
—
Reason No.2
#2. Tigers were in Jungles.
Yes, it has been found, that had the tigers been placed more strategically, for example, in cities, and in particular.. ..between the urban dwellers home and their favorite chinese restaurants, pubs, cinema halls, shopping malls, then the tigers had a much better chance of getting help from citizens of India.
But because the tiger was not there and was in some remote jungle, with a bullet in its head, getting the knife treatment for its skins, claws and bones.. it never gave the Indian citizen the chance to help him…. bad move on the part of the tiger! Seriously bad move!
—
Reason No.1
Numero Uno Time..
#1. & the number one reason why the tigers didn’t survive the battle was that —-Facebook never came up with an application to tell us Indians, how we can save the tiger…. so basically everyone just ended joining Groups, creating Fan Pages….posting “What can we do to save the tiger” or “We must save them” or stuff like “TIgers cubs are so cute”, “Tigers Rock”, … thinking our job was done and slept comfortably!
THINK WHERE YOU STAND IN THIS RANKING……..
—-
The threat to the tigers is very real and unless we overcome our small thinking.. the same that makes us fake, shallow, political, regionalistic, publicity oriented, showy and completely gutless… we will never be able to do something that is real and has some meaning to it. Don’t leave it for a Feb 3rd, 2014… do something now.. before it’s too late…………
I HAVE PICKED UP A VILLEGE NEAR TIGER RESERVE……& EDUCATING CHILDREN ABOUT TIGERS….I CHOSE TO GO UP THE ORDER IN THE FAMILY TREE….YOU DECIDE NOW

Hi all, not to give a lot of personal info, but I’m from America. My brother and I have noticed this commercial and realized that there are only 1411 tigers left in India. It’s very kind of people to actually show care towards these tigers. Reading through all these comments I saw one that really caught my attention. If you look above this comment you can notice a comment under the name ( ARVIND), those are great, but what about the second point. Ok, what’s gonna happen if we tell people who live near tigers? I think that people should be more specific about their ideas and their concerns towards saving our tigers.
THANK YOU all.
I appreciate the work that you have put in, in this page. Really good,
Hello Everybody,
To all the human beings seeing my comment, first i like to congratulate and appreciate the Initiative taken by Aircel. I would like you guys to go watch Discovery and NGC channels and you would be dumbstuck and surprised to know that very few number of tigers left, thats why we are not able to get a view of them even in the jungles when we visit. We may have only hundreds of tiger’s left all over India, and the main cause is the poaching, and we human beings entering the world of forest animals, by occupying the jungles. The forest officials & the governing bodies should give their most, for the interest of the forest and the wild life. The govt should take good initiative and promising steps towards this. As why they not building sancturaries & parks for the tigers and also other animals which are on the verge of extinction. The no. specified of 1411 tigers is average estimation by Wild Life instititute of India, which is done in 2008. The reason i’ve come up with this is to let you know that the Extinction of tigers is not serious its DAMN SERIOUS. Tigers, are one the precious & most powerful species on the earth, on the verge of extinction
i hope we get good & fast responses on this by the Govt. & other officials. Let’s pledge to support for every cause for saving our national animal.
Capital punishment to poachers and shoot at sight orders to forest guards is the answers! On a serious note, must try to replicate the African model of safari to generate revenues and hence make wildlife conservation a serious career alternative for enthusiasts.
hi every one,
I am from assam, my village is near to Kaziranga national park famous for unicorn rhino-which is also one of the good habitat for tigers. but this park faced problem from one invasive weed- Mimossa invisa. this plant destroy the grassland. they are thorny plant, they dominate the tall grasses spreading at a high speed. early eradication required urgently. otherwise this habitat will become ill for tigers.
The 1950s saw extinction of the Caspian tiger. The Bali and Java tiger are also extinct. The last Bali tiger was killed in 1937; the last Javan tiger was seen in 1972. and now in 2010 we will see our national animal extinct. So, wake up and save our national animal before it is too late. Now also we can save this animal with out effort and contribution. By conserving and saving tigers the entire wilderness ecosystem is conserved.
Hi.. Tigers are of grave importance to us. Being out national animal, tigers count in India some 50 years ago, was nearly in tens of thousands. But now what are we doing about the 1411. We should take drastic steps to protect our national animal. I would appreciate this great initiative and i am proud to be a part of it.
JAI HIND.
Time is running out of our hand,we must respond now otherwise it’ll be too late.So friends I would like to say being a responsible citizen,we should give our best to save the life of this beatiful creature.Few things should be start right now (I) captive breeding should be undertaken.
(II) people should be educated about tigers, especially children to create a positive hands as the future is there in their hands & above all (III)stringent law against the poachers must be imposed by the GOVT.
Dear All,
This is really a nice step towards creating a awareness regarding saving our national animal’s identity on this planet. We must spread it all over before our tigers disappears from the planet.
Pls. help to create awareness.
1411 Tigers in India !!. I’d be glad if this number is not inflated. I’ve spent 20 years of my life adjacent to the core area of Buxa Tiger Reserve. The numbers in 1983/84 was in the region of 34 in a area of 750 sq Km. I’ve had sightings only twice, & that too the same tiger. Villagers numbering thousands enter the forest daily to collect firewood and other forest produce for commercial purpose. Illegal activity no doubt, but small compared to what the poachers & timber smugglers have done to the Forest. All this would not be possible without blessings of somebody higher up. Cattle & goats enter the forest as well with in large numbers & any naturalist understand what harm they can do to regeneration of Forest. I’ve seen herders enter the Forest early in the morning and would come out before the sun sets. There is no record of Tigers killing any cow or goat leave alone mauling them. Yes leopards are there and they mostly thrive in the Tea garden areas, as they get dogs, goats, ducks & chicken as easy prey. Forest people say that the Tigers in Buxa Reserve Forest are shy & they do not come out…what a laugh.
I’ve had similar experience in Sunderbans as well, where there is rampant poaching and continuous infiltration. Hordes of illegal immigrants are settling down happily on the Indian side and they are eating into the Forest. The politicians are happy to given them voting rights for their own benefit.
Unless somebody in power with a lot of clout, puts an end to the nexus of politicians, corrupt officials and the poachers. Nothing will happen. Tigers will fade away. Seminars after seminars will be held. A few of so called lovers of the wild though big names in the media., are aware of this, but they also do not want to disturb this nexus, as their funding might get stopped.
It is indeed a bleak situation. I just hope that this initiative taken by Aircel produces some result. I will keep praying. Anybody ..anybody who has been lucky to see a full grown Tiger in the wild, at close quarters will understand my pain. We just cannot afford to loose this treasure.
hi all,
Why are we waiting for the government…… it is our duty to protect. If we go on putting blame…nothing will be solved…I am happy that aircel came up with the idea…Fund should be raised for protecting these cute creations. Other big co-operates should also come forward. We are taking everything good from the universe, hence we should also contribute back. We should not cut short our feeling in the form of
words only. It is a shame if we are not able to save our home(earth) and our friends. Man is responsible for everything…Jago India!
Hi Everyone,
It is such a shame for the Indians that we are unable to protect our heritage, the National Animal.
I wonder how mankind can be so selfish & mean minded.
The NGO’s should rather ask the Govt. to impose strict laws for the culprits, the poachers. They must be punished severly. One should HANG them.
Also any product made of animal skin, bones, etc………….. should be banned and if any one found selling or buying such products should be fined heavily.
And why only Tigers, i feel all animals should be treated with love and respect, for that matter even a stray dog.
If Human Beings have the right to live with dignity so does all other living creatures.
Its high time the Govt should wake up especially after watching the number slide from 40,000 to 1411 just in a centuries time.
And yes, all those inefficient Forest Officers having a gala time, should resign. This post is not meant for incapable people.
CAN WE SEE SOME ACTION ON THIS NOW………………………………………
My real worries still remain the same.
are WE able to address, make any sort of difference to the real issues:
1) Human population taking over forest as a desperate effort of survival pushing original inhabitants further back in their own territory -the man v/s animal conflict.
2) Preserving eco system so that all types of animals, plants continue to grow -the food chain.
3) Enough alternate employment opportunity for people in close proximity to forest so that poachers can’t exploit them
4) Capital punishment for poachers
—-Jaydeep (Kolkata)
Hi People,
Really today we need to stand together and help the tigers in india.
Tigers are our pride and every indian citizen is responsible for the tigers growth.
PLEASE AS PER ME:—-
NOW TIGER CUB SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BE GROWN IN OUR OWN HOMES, IF YOU WANT THAN THERE SHOULD BE SOME KIND OF CRITERIA THAT AS THEY GROW UPTO 1YR - 2 YR THAN WE WILL RETURN IT TO ZOO OR TO THE ORGANIZATION.
THESE WON’T BE MADE TO THE MARK UNLESS INDIAN CITIZEN TRIES TO GROW THE TIGERS INTHIER LAND WIHT BOUNDARIES.
INDIAN GOVWERNMENT OR MR PRESIDENT / PRIME MINISTER PLEASE ALLOW THE PEOPLE YOU OWN THE LAND OF 2 HEKTER TO GROW ATLEAST 1 TIGER IN THIER LAND. HAVE AN INSPWECTION IN EVERY 3 MONTHS.
BY THIS ONLY WE CAN INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TIGERS.
COMMOM PEIOPLE GEAR UP AND INCREASE THE TIGER COUNT.
thanks for coming to my school
. tiger is my favourite animal , and i think tigers shall not be killled by porchers or anyone….. it is our duty to protect our tigers as it is our national animal.as everyone knows before 20 years they were tigers between 70,000 to 80,000. but now it is decreased a lot. so we have to not kill them.:)
I just got an idea to initiate a fund collection drive. I have noticed the save our tigers t shirts in the advertizement. I suggest merchandise (T shirts, diaries, calendars, cups etc.)can be put on sale. It will definitely encourage people to buy and increase the roar visually.
Thanks.
Hi All,
I love Pets the most, and all my family members loves Tigers the most of all animals. They are so beautiful and its really surprising that day by day their count is decreasing. They are our national pride, and plays an important role in Food Chain….
Please join your hands to Save these…We cant survive without our mom…Then how can we expect Stripey to live without his mom….
Love you Stripey !!!!!!!
about the end of january , I met , in Mamallapuram (TN), a guy who wanted to sell me tiger claws and teeth; when very angrily I screamed him that it is illegal and forbidden (no policemen around ) he looked at me like I was a stupid. I was on the point to smash the face of that /edit/.
how can you hope to save the tiger with such a people around ?
